Recruitment Its Not Speed Dating
Recruitment Its Not Speed Dating This is one of my favourite topics. I believe this is what will differentiate the winners from the losers in recruitment. In the end, a recruiter is as good as the number of candidates that she or he can close. That is it. So what recruiters are going to need in the next 3 years, is the ability to architect the deal. Something I feel we as an industry lost in the boom era. I use the word âarchitectâ because it suggests designing, building, creating, managing. And these are the complex and subtle skills you will need to thrive going forward. In recent years recruiters did no placement process architecture. What 90% of recruiters did, and still do, is pure introduction. Thatâs all we did. We were like organisers of a speed dating night. Throwing loosely compatible people together in an artificial environment for a short time and hoping they would fall in love! That wonât do any more. Those recruiters who understand that the human touch is still our primary tool in making a hire work, are those who will be most successful. So how do we get better at âPlacement Architectureâ? There are three components to building strong hiring process, and these are skills you are going to need: Take the time required Recruitment is a series of discrete human interactions, and great recruiters will manage, control, and influence the outcome of each of those interactions to maximise success. Listen better than ever before Uncovering, questioning, and understanding are sadly undervalued recruiter skills that we need to hire and coach back into our business. Most recruiters do none of this. They act on the clientâs word as if it is the true gospel, or they tell clients what to do without asking questions first. It sounds counter-intuitive, but great recruiters will purposely be âslow to understandâ. Question everything The biggest cause of placements falling through is people making assumptions. Recruiters taking what they are told at face value. Ask for the âwhy and howâ of everything that does not ring true, and donât stop asking until you get an answer. The good news is that the role of the recruiter, per se, is not under threat from technology or anything else. But the bad news is that the days of the dinosaur recruiter, unwilling to adapt, are well and truly numbered. RELATED: Why Being a Recruiter Rocks!

Rights For Interns Mobile App Launched - Payback Time
Rights For Interns Mobile App Launched - Payback Time Rights For Interns Trade Union Congress (TUC), along with help from Intern Aware and Graduate Fog have developed and released a Rights for Interns app. In 2010 Rights for Interns was launched, along with help from NUS. TUC says This app has been produced by the TUC to provide interns with a convenient and accessible way of assessing quality information about their employment rights. For the first time we have come across an app that tells students of their rights in an internship. The cloudiness over national minimum wage and unpaid internships is something every student wants clearing up on. Hopefully, the government clears up the air. Looks unlikely though. Rights For Interns TUC, along with Intern Aware and Graduate Fog have worked out a solution by developing a mobile app, as more and more young students and graduates consume information on the go! Rights for Interns app is built up on the already available information on the Rights For Interns website, launched by TUC way back in 2010. It was in February of 2012 when I heard of the Rights for Interns App and it was to be launched then. But the noise died down after that and it was brought to my notice that it was finally released on 18 July 2012 on the Apple Store. On checking it up, I realised that Google Play Store had the app page updated on 11July 2012. I have no knowledge to report on what happened in between these months. Rights for Interns is available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Rights For Interns User Comment A user of the app comments UK internships can be good or lousy. This app has helpful quizzes to see if your internship makes the grade and what you can do about it if it doesnt. Google Play Store You can find out more about the app on TUCs website here. Please Note: Involvement of Intern Aware, Graduate Fog and NUS is reported by sources, I could not find any information from their websites. Twentysomething Memo to managers to watch your mouth!
Twentysomething Memo to managers to watch your mouth! By Ryan Healy As much as I enjoy the company of my supervisors and consider many of them my friends, we still work in a professional environment and they are a step above me on the food chain. So I watch what comes out of my mouth around higher level co-workers, but its just as important for them to watch what they say, too. Here are five things you should never say or do around any young workers who you want to keep around: Put your iPod away. Want to see your young workers jet to a new company after a few months? Tell them they arent allowed to listen to their I-Pods in the office. I feel naked without mine. I work out with it, walk with it, attach it to my car stereo and listen to it when Im working or writing. An old supervisor once told me to put away my I-Pod. I did. Until he left the room! We all see the stories about small startups and Googles working environments. These companies are the gold standard for twentysomethings. Employees wear jeans and T-shirts and work from rainbow colored bean bag chairs. If the office Im at doesnt even let me listen to an i-Pod, they are obviously behind the times. Who wants to work for a boring, outdated company? Pay your dues. I understand the logic behind this way of thinking. Theres certainly something to be said for putting in your time and learning the ropes before jumping into a management position, but watch your wording. Ryan Geist once put it this way: Dont tell me to pay my dues. Tell me to sell myself. The point is, youngsters are not stupid. We know a few years of grunt work is to be expected, but we dont like to think of it as paying dues. Young workers will respond better if you say something like, develop your skill set or build your brand. These are two positive ways to imply the same message. Paying your dues is not entirely false, but its significance gets lost in translation. It screams negativity. . Dont you wish we were on vacation all the time? No, actually I dont wish I was on vacation all the time. I plan to accomplish many things in my short time on this planet. Getting a great tan on a life long vacation is right above swimming with sharks on my to-do list. If a manager that I plan to replace one day said this to me, I would have more than a few second thoughts. Desiring to be on vacation all the time implies that you dont like your job and you have little ambition. I dont want to work for a company that doesnt keep their employees happy, and I dont want to work for a manager who has no aspirations. Before I was at the top of the food chain This is my all time favorite. Please do not talk about your days as a low-level cog in the corporate machine. For one thing, those days are now my reality. Its not necessary to remind me about the late nights and crummy hotels you were stuck in. But also, I know youre the boss. I do not need to be reminded. I have seen the corporate reporting structure, and unless youre the CEO, youre not at the top of the food chain. If a manager needs to talk about their status as the boss, this gives the impression that the company is apprehensive about status and titles. Young people really dont care about titles. My goal is not the corner office and Im not awestruck by a high profile executive. Were all people. I wasted a huge part of my youth doing what you are doing. Yes, somebody actually said this to me. Focus Only on What You Can Control
Focus Only on What You Can Control Happy Monday Morning! It is officially 2009. For most of us that means packing our gym bag and salad today, and bringing an unusually positive attitude with us to work. We are hoping to make things a little better than last year. Today will be full of meetings, 2009 planning and organizing. There may be new policies and procedures that you arent comfortable with. Your email box may be flooded from the long holiday break. If you are truly committed to making 2009 the best year yet, remember this: ONLY FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL. My first manager gave me this simple advice. When followed, it can change many aspects of your life for the better. You may not like all of your co-workers, you hate the new computer system, or you are stuck with a difficult client: if you cant change it, adapt and start caring about something you CAN change. Like your attitude. Dwelling on the bad weather, the traffic jam or a down economy is a waste of your time. If we do this, we are basically letting all of our co-workers and competition pass us up. Winners dont have time to moan and complain about things they cannot change, they are busy innovating new ways to make their conditions work for them. Try it out today and let me know how it went. I guarantee you will have a lot more time in your day and attract more good things by thinking positive and focusing on what you can control.
